Being the publishing (and movie) phenomenon that it is means this will be the biggest seller of the year whatever I say about it, and in some ways that's quite liberating. So I don't have to hold back.
At 784 pages it's the second longest of the Potter series, and, as I'm sure you all know, the last in the series. If I tell you that the ending definitely draws a line under the whole saga, and there really won't be another, don't think you can guess the end. Believe me, you won't guess right.
Unlike her other books, most of which can be read 'standalone', there is very little 'back story' retold through this tale. In other words, if this is the first Potter book that you read, much will not make sense. You need to bring your understanding of the Hogwarts world with you, as JK Rowling just ploughs headlong through the story.
I'm not going to reveal the story - that would be mean. But I will pose one question ? Are there any loose ends left when the story finishes ? Largely the answer is no. We find the true nature of Severus Snape. We learn much more about Dumbledore (and his family) that explain much of the Headmaster's views and motivation. And there really is a satisfactory conclusion to the fate of Potter vs. Voldemorte.
